Franziska Maeder – Hotel Concierge at The Beekman Hotel
This week I took a venture down to one of the most historic downtown neighborhoods in New York City to spend time talking to Franziska Maeder of the Beekman Hotel. The Beekman is one of the most amazing restorations you’ll ever see in the city. It is the ultimate display of time traveling between spaces. I knew Franziska, affectionately known as Ziska, would be a joy to chat with. Ziska personifies what loving life is really all about. She starts her mornings with meditations and finds daily inspiration through the power of love, music, and traveling. She’s not afraid of enjoying the best pasta and loves the color red as much as she does children. Ziska shared some gems as to why she is one name that you should definitely remember!
What would you say is a secret to your formula of bringing the magic that comes with your role? If I were a visitor in NYC, why would I call Ziska first?
To be honest the magic is to be able to read the people that you have in front of you. Regardless of what kind of connection you have on a personal level you know exactly how to make them happy and that’s why we are “magicians”. I am able to provide the guests with options they haven’t even thought about. Not just because of the inside information I have, but also from the information I’ve gained after living here for so long.
What’s a good piece of advice you can give to a traveler or even a local, who may not be in the habit of seeking a concierge’s expertise that go beyond seeking Yelp reviews for new places to explore?
I certainly love Time Out [Magazine]. It’s Full all of all the info and fun events you need. Chat away with some locals at the bar, you know…you always get great recommendations that way.
What is one of the most memorable or even “craziest” requests (that you can share) a client has requested of you?
I've had a bunch of guys that were in house for a Bachelor party ask me to organize a goat... a living one. It was some sort of a weird prank... Rest assured it didn’t happen but I will definitely never forget that request.
So travelers, The Beekman is cool, but Ziska is even cooler. The moral of the story is bring your own mammals. Also do not forget to check out our Instagram post on Ziska.
